| 'Mikal With' is a versatile compact Norwegian short-sea cargo vessel built by Vaagland Batbyggeri and currently working for fish farming group EWOS whose logo is emblazoned on its hull. The Ro-Ro class ship is largely autonomous in its ability to handle cargoes - an essential feature for tonnage designed to ply Norway's extensive coastal waters for owner Egil Ulvan Rederi of Trondheim. Classification is DnV: 1A1 General Cargo Carrier, RO, Ice C, EO.
Key dimensions are 55.38 metres LOA, by 13 metres breadth, by 7.2 metres depth to shelter deck, by 4.2 metres draft. Tonnage is 1,200 deadweight.
Nominal capacity is 59 standard containers and cargo hold volume is 2,375m3. The hull design and layout of key handling systems - 40-tonne and 10-tonne Dreggen cargo cranes, side loader with elevators by TTS-Mongstad, and pneumatic unloading system by Atlas Copco - should make for exceptional flexibility of operation, not least the carriage of fish farming systems, feeds and salmon product for EWOS, which is a leading Norwegian aquaculture group.
The hull topsides are protected by extensive offshore supply vessel style beltings and the compact superstructure is located as far forward as possible to maximise space on the open-railed shelter deck, which gives way to an enclosed shelter forward. The standard of finishing in the bridge and accommodation areas is exceptional, with polished strip hardwood flooring in both the bridge and saloon.
The heart of 'Mikal With' is a MaK diesel rated 1140kW at 1000rpm, coupled to a gearbox and 2800mm fixed pitch propeller, both by Finnoy. This package can drive the vessel at up to 12 knots. The MaK also drives a 644kVA Stamford/Newage shaft generator. Particular attention has been paid to minimising harmful exhaust emissions for which a Munners Europe catalytic exhaust gas purifier plant is fitted.
Auxiliary systems comprise 244kVA and 400kVA Caterpillar/Stamford generators, manoeuvring is enhanced two 120kW Brunvoll thrusters, and the steering is Rolls Royce Tenfjord coupled to a Volda balanced rudder.
The vessel’s electronic fit-out is extensive, main element, comprising: Furuno FR-2115 and FR-2115 radars, Furuno FE-700 sounder, Furuno radio station, Furuno DS-70 log, Simrad Robertson RGC 11 gyrocompass, Robertson AP9 Mk 3 autopilot, Simrad GN 30 GPS navigator, and Phontech intercom.
Vaagland Batbyggeri is just one of many efficient smallish shipyards dotted around the Norwegian coastline that somehow keep going, even prosper in some cases.
This particular yard was founded in 1927 in Halsa, about 130 km south west of Trondheim. Until 1962 it built 63 wooden vessels, since when it has delivered around 70 steel vessels… mostly for fishing: purse seiners and stern trawlers, but also cargo vessels, live fish carriers, ferries and service and working vessels. All building and outfitting takes place indoors in a 85 x 17 x 7 metre covered drydock.
